Although I have already mentioned that Cass Business school will offer classes in Islamic finance, I wanted to link to an article on CNN.com. I was encouraged to see recognition that "Muslims also believe that investing should be socially responsible." The recognition that Islamic finance and investing is at its heart a type of ethical investing will increase its appeal among Muslims and also provide an easy way to draw non-Muslims into the industry.

Islamic finance in Botswana

The First National Bank of Botswana (FNBB) announced it will offer Shari'ah-compliant products in addition to its conventional banking products. According to the article, 15,000-20,000 Muslims live in Botswana out of a total population of 1.6 million, although other estimates of the Muslim population range from 3,000 to 75,000.

Global Islamic Finance Forum 2007

Bank Negara Malaysia, Malaysia's central bank, will host a four-day conference centered around the Islamic Financial Services Board annual meeting. The keynote address at the conference, held from March 26 - 29, 2007, is from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the Malaysian Prime Minister.

This conference is one of many included in the Institute of Halal Investing list of conferences.

Emirates Bank enters Asia through Singapore

Emirati Islamic bank, Emirates Bank plans to expand into the Asia/Pacific region through Singapore. The branch has been open since November, but the formal opening will occur this week.

CORRECTION

Yesterday, I mistakenly said that Syed Tariq Hussain was chairman of Emirates Islamic Bank and Emirates Global Islamic Bank Ltd. He is only chairman of Emirates Global Islamic Bank Ltd.
